Ohio History Connection Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy applies to information collected online by the Ohio History Connection ("OHC") in connection with its U.S.-based websites, microsites, mobile sites or mobile apps that expressly adopt, display or link to this Privacy Policy (collectively referred to as our “Sites”), including the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks website. It also applies to information OHC collects in connection with OHC pages on social media sites, such as Facebook®, X®, Instagram®, TikTok®, and others (collectively referred to as our “Social Media Pages”). Our Sites are not directed at children under the age of 13 or, in California, the age of 16. No one under those ages should provide their information on our Sites or our Social Media Pages.

 

WHAT INFORMATION ABOUT YOU DOES OHC COLLECT?

We may collect information about you (hereafter, “Your Information”) from a variety of sources, including when you provide us Your Information, when we observe or collect Your Information through the use of technology, when we receive information about you from third parties, and/or when we collect Your Information on our Social Media Pages.

Information You Provide

We may ask you to provide information about yourself directly to our Sites, such as the following:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Email address
  • Telephone number
  • Username and password
  • Personal preferences in respect to our Sites and Social Media Pages, programs, historic sites and collections
  • Reservation or purchase information
  • Payment or credit card information
  • Dependent information
  • Resume, cover letter and similar employment-related materials
  • Visitor surveys
  • Attendance at events
  • Your use of our historic sites and museums


We may also allow you to use your personal social media accounts to provide information to us when you participate in certain features on our Sites and our Social Media Pages, such as:

  • Name
  • Profile picture
  • Gender, including whether you are non-binary
  • Networks
  • User ID
  • List of friends or connections
  • Language
  • Birthday
  • Education
  • Work history
  • Address
  • Interests and likes
  • Country of citizenship

 

It is possible that we will be able to continue collecting this information from your personal social media accounts should the information be revised by you. You may choose not to provide us with certain requested information, but then you might not be able to take advantage of some of the features on our Sites and Social Media Pages.

Information Observed or Collected Through the Use of Technology

We or our third-party vendors may collect navigational information as you use our Sites and Social Media Pages, such as:

  • Browser type and version
  • Operating system
  • Internet service provider
  • IP address
  • The links you use to arrive at our Sites and Social Media Pages
  • Web pages requested and viewed
  • The amount of time you spend on our Sites and Social Media Pages
  • Screen size
  • How images appear on your device
  • Cookies


We and our third-party vendors may also collect information regarding your location when you visit our Sites and Social Media Pages, including:

  • Maps and directions to our historic sites and museums that you may request
  • The postal code for your location when you open certain emails sent by us

 

Cookies and Related Technology

We and our third-party vendors use cookies. Cookies assign a unique identification to your device and are typically stored on your device by your web browser. We may also use pixel tags (also known as web beacons, web bugs and clear GIFs) on the Sites and in email messages. A pixel tag is a nearly invisible pixel-sized graphic image on a webpage or in an email message.

The information we and our third-party vendors collect through cookies, pixel tags and similar technology includes:

  • Your interactions with our Sites and with our advertisements
  • The time of your visit to our Sites
  • Confirmation when you open email from us, including the time you open the email and whether you click on any links in the email
  • Sites you visit after visiting one of our Sites

 

Information Obtained from Third Parties

We may combine information about you from other sources with Your Information collected on our Sites or Social Media Pages.

If you search for or apply for a job with OHC, we may use a third-party vendor to collect and process applicant profiles and preferences, monitor website activity, maintain the database based in the U.S. and provide plug-ins (such as LinkedIn) at your request. We require that the information you provide on pages hosted by these third parties be maintained by them in confidence. Information you voluntarily supply will be stored in a database, which will be accessed by authorized personnel of OHC to address your inquiry or consider you for employment purposes. We may also keep the information for future consideration.

OHC contracts with other not-for-profit organizations, educational institutions, and local and state government agencies in respect to the management and operation of historic sites. Those organizations may provide OHC with information about you that they have collected. OHC does not manage or direct the use of sites and social media pages by these organizations. You should assure yourself of the privacy of information collected by those organizations by contacting them directly. A directory of the organizations can be found here.

 

HOW DO WE USE YOUR INFORMATION?

The information about you we collect helps us personalize your experience with us and our communications to you, and helps us continually improve your experience on our Sites and our Social Media Pages. Our use of Your Information includes:

  • Opening an online account
  • Servicing customers
  • Advertising and marketing, including personalized email and postal mail
  • Designing programs and collections
  • Making improvements to our historic sites and museums
  • Making purchases
  • Making reservations
  • Updating online textbooks and other publications
  • Responding to inquiries
  • Conducting market research
  • Taking surveys
  • Conducting events and meetings
  • Processing job applications
  • Setting hours of operation

 

Our uses of navigational information gathered through the use of technology includes:

  • Identifying the parts of our Sites and Social Media Pages most frequently visited and used
  • Features and products viewed or visited while browsing
  • Improvements in how we conduct business
  • The effectiveness of our Site and Social Media Pages
  • Problems in accessing our Sites and Social Media Pages
  • The number of visitors to our Sites and Social Media Pages
  • The time spent on our Sites and Social Media Pages
  • Programming errors or other failures in our Sites

 

We use information collected through cookies and similar technology to determine many of the same things listed for navigational information. In addition, our use of cookies and similar technology include: 

  • Personalizing your experience on our Sites
  • Serving tailored ads on other sites
  • Tailoring email marketing to you based on your preferences and on our use of our Sites
  • Determining return visitors
  • Measuring the effectiveness of our advertising

Similar to the navigational information described above, the social media sites where we have our Social Media Pages may provide aggregate information and analysis to us about visitors to our Social Media Pages. This allows us to better understand and analyze the growth in the number of our users and their demographics. It also allows us to analyze how you react to information on our Social Media Pages.

 

PRIVACY OF CHILDREN ON OUR SITES

We do not knowingly collect or maintain information provided by children under the age of 13 or, for children who reside in California, those under the age of 16. Children under these ages must have the consent of a parent or guardian in order to use our Sites and our Social Media Pages, and to provide to us their information. DO WE USE TECHNOLOGY TO ADVERTISE ON OTHER SITES?

OHC occasionally advertises on other Sites or Social Media Pages. OHC may use Your Information to determine where and when to place such advertisements. You have the right to opt out of the use of Your Information for advertisement on other Sites.

 

DOES OHC SHARE YOUR INFORMATION WITH AFFILIATED ORGANIZATIONS?

OHC contracts with local not-for-profit organizations, educational institutions and state and local government agencies (“Affiliated Organizations”) for the management and operation of our historic sites and museums throughout Ohio. We may share Your Information with those Affiliated Organizations to create a cohesive experience for our supporters and patrons. For example, when you become a member of the Ohio History Connection, we may make Your Information available to certain Affiliated Organizations so they can verify your eligibility for free admission or other member benefits at the site(s) they manage.

Each Affiliated Organization may have its own unique data practices that are not contained in this Policy. When we share Your Information with our Affiliated Organizations, they are bound to use that information in accordance with their privacy statement and with regard to their own operations. You may contact those Organizations directly to request a copy of their privacy policies.

 

DOES OHC SHARE YOUR INFORMATION WITH UNRELATED THIRD PARTIES?

OHC does not sell, rent or trade Your Information to unrelated third parties. If you would like to opt out of OHC sharing Your Information with unrelated third parties in the future, click the link below or email your request to optout@ohiohistory.org.

YOUR RIGHTS IN YOUR INFORMATION

You may have the following rights in respect to Your Information, depending on the laws of the place where you reside:

  • Security of Data. You have the right to the secure storage of use of Your Information such that unauthorized third parties will not access it.

 

For our international users, you should know that OHC is based in the United States. Your Information will be stored on servers at OHC or in the cloud at locations within the United States.

  • Access. You may have the right to request access to Your Information, including details relating to the ways in which we use and share your information.
  • Deletion. You may have a right to request that we delete information we maintain about you, when allowed by law.
  • Correction. You may have the right to request that we correct inaccurate information we maintain about you.
  • Portability. You may have a right to receive a copy of the information we hold about you and to request that we transfer it to a third party, in certain circumstances and with certain exceptions.
  • Opt out of Advertising. In the event that OHC sells or shares Your Information, you may have the right to opt out of the processing of Your Information for purposes considered to be “targeted advertising”.
  • Opt out of the Use of Your Information. You may have the right to direct us to limit our use and/or disclosure of Your Information to only what is necessary to perform our services or provide our goods.
  • Restriction on Processing. You may have the right to ask us to stop or restrict our processing of Your Information.
  • Withdrawal of Consent. Where we rely on consent to process Your Information, you may have the right to withdraw this consent.
  • Appeal. You may have a right to appeal our decision if we decline to process your request, unless we are legally bound to retain information you have requested we delete. You can appeal by replying directly to our denial.
  • Managing Communication Preferences. You may have the right to opt out of receiving targeted or marketing email messages. If you opt out, we may still send you non-promotional email.
  • Nondiscrimination. OHC will not discriminate against you because you opted to exercise any applicable rights.
  • Request for Information about Use of Data. If you reside in California, you can request information about the third parties with whom OHC has shared Your Information in the prior twelve months. As an alternative to providing this information to you, OHC can provide you with a means to opt out of the provision of Your Information to third parties at no cost to you.

 

DATA SECURITY

Our Sites utilize commercially reasonable precautions, including encryption technology, firewalls and other reasonable technical, administrative and physical measures designed to protect the personal information in our custody or control from unauthorized access, use, modification and disclosure. We monitor our systems for possible vulnerabilities and attacks.

We contract with third-party vendors to securely store the personal information you provide and we collect. We regularly review the security standards and practices of those vendors. No organization can offer complete assurance that data will be secure, but OHC takes security seriously and makes reasonable efforts to protect your information.

The vendors we use to store Your Information on our behalf include but are not limited to the following. Links to the vendor’s privacy policies have been included where available.

 

While OHC may provide links to the sites and social media pages of third parties, it does not control or direct the security measures for such sites. You should assure yourself of the security of such sites before accessing them.

 

UPDATING INFORMATION

You may review and update Your Information by contacting us. We may request that you take reasonable measures to verify your identity before we change or allow you to change Your Information.

 

CHANGES IN THIS POLICY

We periodically review and update this policy, so you should check the policy before you provide Your Information to us.

Although it is unlikely, it is possible that OHC may merge with or otherwise be acquired by another party. In that event, you should check this policy for changes implemented by the new owner.
