Supermoon After Hours Tour: Octagon Earthworks
Experience the Octagon Earthworks under the light of a SUPERMOON!
Join us for a special after-hours tour of the Octagon Earthworks, part of the Newark Earthworks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is no ordinary full moon tour! We’ll gather as the sun sets and the Moon rises, offering a unique opportunity to experience this incredible place during a spectacular lunar event.
Meet us at the Octagon Earthworks Visitor Center for a guided, hour-long walking tour led by Sarah Hinkelman, archaeologist and Site Superintendent of the Newark Earthworks.
Together, we’ll explore:
- The vast scale of the Octagon and the remarkable achievements of its builders.
- The complexity of its design and the relationships between its geometric shapes.
- The Octagon’s fascinating connection to the Moon and the lunar cycles that make this place so extraordinary.
- What this sacred place meant to the People of the Hopewell Culture—and what it can mean to us today.
- And, of course, we’ll have the chance to experience the Octagon Earthworks as the supermoon lights up the night sky!
No advance registration required—just show up and pay at the door!
What to Know:
- The tour begins around sunset and continues into the evening.
- Flashlights will be available to borrow if needed.
- The walk covers approximately 1 mile over uneven, unpaved ground. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and plan accordingly.
- Moonrise visibility and weather conditions may affect our view of the supermoon.
Don’t miss this special opportunity to discover the Octagon Earthworks in a whole new light and experience the wonder of this extraordinary place beneath a supermoon. We hope to see you there!
